book to other media review 1: anne with an e

On the myriad of movies and TV shows available on Netflix, Anne With An E is not a popular one that comes to mind. However, as an active Netflix binger and professional couch potato, here’s my review of the different aspects of this particular TV show.

  1. Characters

Characters are one of the most important factors in any piece of entertainment, whether it would be a movie, TV show, book etc. This TV show is based off the classic novel, Anne of Green Gables and is centred around the main character, Anne. In this show, Anne is back in yet another screen reprise of the somehow loved role, despite her interesting attitude and moral compass. Although Anne is supposed to be the star of the show, I believe that the notorious Gilbert Blythe passes off as a better character, in terms of maturity, personality, and attitude. However, nobody can argue with the fact that the casting director definitely chose the right people to fill these roles as Amybeth McNulty and Lucas J. Zumann both fill these roles as the main characters. Along with the classic characters like Anne, Gilbert, Diana, Marilla, and Matthew come new characters that the show decided to introduce. Some of these are Jerry (the farmhand), Cole (introduced in the second season), and Sebastian (also introduced in season two). Overall, the range of characters is pretty good, despite the fact that in order to keep it historically accurate, most of the characters are white. Out of all the characters, my personal favourites are Gilbert (for his maturity), Jerry (for his sense of humor), and Diana (for her loyalty).

2. Plot

Overall, the plot is, well, interesting. But not in like an engaging way, as in the way that there are some episodes that are really interesting and others that are, questionable… For example, for the first few episodes of season 1, it was mostly setting up the story, which was fine. In the third episode, it got more interesting. However, personally, the first two episodes were redundant for me because I’ve already read the book. On the other hand, if you’re new to Anne of Green Gables and the plot, I would definitely recommend watching the first two episodes. Overall, I showed this to my older brother, someone who’s never read Anne of Green Gables, and although he thought the introduction was helpful, he though that overall, the series was more of a narration through her life rather than a drama, like Riverdale. However, it is like Riverdale in the sense that both of these TV shows takes a light-hearted and innocent piece of literature and turns it into something, well, less innocent. The plot becomes more engaging as you go into the dark flashbacks of Anne’s past, at least for me, and the plot became more engaging in the middle of season two where something relatively big happened to Avonlea. Overall, I would say that this show is good for just mindless watching and a good story, but not if you want anything with drama, thriller etc.

3. Aesthetic

Anne With An E really redeems itself with the overall aesthetic of the show. The show is set in the small town of Avonlea, which gives really great vintage vibes, with the aesthetically pleasing landscape shots and wardrobe. All the props are quite historically accurate and have a very natural and organic feel to it. In addition to that, I personally find the neutral and creamy palette of the show extremely satisfying, along with the mix of pastel flowers and greenery. If I was to choose an aesthetic for my life from a TV show, I would definitely choose this one. The soundtrack of this TV show has a very cheerful tone, which matches the whimsical aspects of this show.

Because there’s way too many aspects of this show to talk about in one blog post, I’m going to end my Anne With An E. Continuing my habit that I started yesterday, I’m going to add an Anne With An E aesthetic mood board. See you guys in my next post!

suggestions for where to start writing

If you’re reading this, then I’m pretty sure you’ve read the title and wanted to find out where to start writing. Even though in your every day middle school, high school or college classroom there have always been times where there’s that one person who’s obsessed with writing, chances are, they either haven’t gotten their writing published or don’t even know on which platform to start writing. If you’re one of those people or if you simply are attempting to delve into the world of writing, here are some places that you can go (reference not intended).

  1. Write The World

Write The World is one of my personal favourites, as there are so many opportunities for writing on it. By the way, I’m not sponsored by any of these platforms (hah, I wish..). Anyways, coming back to the recommendation, Write The World has a huge variety of different functions. For example, if you’re like me, a typical broke student with unorganised goals and ideas, Write The World offers competitions, which not only can help you earn money but can also allow you to receive peer feedback from other writers and professionals. Also, you can join writing groups and communities without even having to physically talk to them and ask in person. Literally every introvert’s dream.

2. NaNoWriMo

Even though I’ve been using NaNoWriMo a lot less frequently and for a lot less time than Write The World, I still think that it’s a good platform for writers to start with. For example, a special feature of theirs allows you to set goals for your writing. But not just an ordinary goal, oh no, a SMART goal, also known as a Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-based goal. I can already hear the groans of prior students already clicking out of this page. I’m sorry. But anyways, for those of you who stayed, NaNoWriMo is great for building communities and motivation for you to get started on actually writing your next best-seller (or your first). But I have to warn you not to try get publishers on this site, as it’s simply a shortcut and your writing is a lot more valuable than a simple shortcut.

3. Wattpad/ Tumblr

The reason I lumped these two platforms together in a group is because of one reason and one reason only: fan-fiction. I don’t know what you’ve heard, but personally, I’ve heard a lot of people who were dissuaded from writing on these sites due to their notoriety in that genre. However, tumblr and Wattpad are good places to get recognition for your writing, due to the fact of the already high amounts of viewer traffic on these sites. In my opinion, out of these two, Wattpad is the better platform if you want to get your next novel read and recognised, due to the fact that you can vote on stories and rise in rankings for different categories. However, tumblr has quite high amounts of viewer traffic, and getting people to reblog and/ or view your stories is easier than on Wattpad, especially if you use the correct tage

So, I’m going to end my writing platform recommendations here because even though there a lot of writing platforms out there, these are the ones with the most accepting communities and are the easiest to build yourself up from for free. I think that I’m going to make a habit of ending each of my writing pieces with a poem, picture, music, or definition. See you guys tomorrow!

here’s a start…

Well, hello there! I would introduce you to myself and who I am, only, I don’t really know which volume, chapter, or even page of my life that is. All I can do is show you who I am through each word that your eyes pass over on my blog. I am currently writing under a pseudonym of Rue, but maybe one day I’ll share who I actually am.

I think that’s enough of that for now as it is currently almost 1 am here in the wonderful city of Singapore, located in Singapore (I know, it is really weird entering my location in onto Amazon). I’m not really sure what I am going to do with this blog, but hey, all authors need their readers so I hope that you’ll stay with me as I continue to write. And if you don’t, all I can do is warn you that you’re missing an exceptional opportunity to communicate with yours truly, Rue.

To end this blog post that I am positive I will cringe at when I come back to look at it in the future, I’m going to use an author’s craft move of using a quote (you’re welcome Mr. B.) Anyways, I’m finally ending it and I’ll see you in my next entry.
